WINERY CASTLE GOBELSBURG

SCHLOSS GOBELSBURG is the oldest winery in the Danube region of Kamptal and can look back on a documented winegrowing history dating back to the 12th century. In 2021, Schloss Gobelsburg celebrates its 850th vintage of the time-honored domaine. Cistercian monks, received their first vineyards in 1171 and have had a lasting impact on viticulture in Austria over the past 850 years. Since 1996, the winery has been run by the Eva and Michael Moosbrugger family.
In the Krems Danube valleys there are two basic soil structures for the cultivation of white wine. On the one hand, there are the barren and stony terraced vineyards, where Riesling cultivation prevailed in the past century; on the other hand, there are the loessy, sandy soils, which are excellently suited for the cultivation of Grüner Veltliner.

Gobelsburg Castle: Winery

The Schloss Gobelsburg winery is one of the leading wineries in Austria. It is located in the Kamptal region, about 70 kilometers north of Vienna, and has a long history and tradition in viticulture.

The winery is part of the historic Gobelsburg Castle, which looks back on a history of over 800 years. It is run by the renowned Langenlois winemaking family and has an impressive winemaking history dating back to the 12th century.

Schloss Gobelsburg is best known for its first-class white wines made from the Grüner Veltliner and Riesling grape varieties. These wines are characterized by their freshness, mineral notes and elegant structure. However, the winery also produces excellent red wines, such as Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, which benefit from the local terroir conditions.

The Schloss Gobelsburg winery places great emphasis on traditional viticultural methods and sustainability. It is committed to biodynamic viticulture and uses natural practices to promote the health of the vines and the quality of the grapes. This philosophy is reflected in Schloss Gobelsburg's characterful and expressive wines.

The wines of Schloss Gobelsburg have received great international recognition and have been awarded a large number of prizes. The winery is a member of the renowned association "Österreichische Traditionsweingüter" (Austrian traditional wineries) and is characterized by high quality and high standards in wine production.

The wines

Ried STEINSETZ - Gobelsburg | Kamptal DAC Grüner Veltliner

The Steinsetz vineyard is located in the southern Kamptal, which is characterized by the original course of the Urdonau and Urtraisen rivers. Depending on the
river section and current, smaller to larger river pebbles - mainly quartzites from the Alpine region - were deposited. Above the Danube sediments there is in places a layer of loess layer of 10 - 50 cm.

Ried SPIEGEL - Gobelsburg | Kamptal DAC Reserve Grüner Veltliner

Ried Spiegel is a ridge of land stretching towards the east-southeast south of Langenlois. The parent material for the deep, calcareous soils is the mighty loess with its balanced mineral composition. Thin gravel layers in places and old soil formations indicate a division by different climatic phases in the loess package.

Ried RENNER - Kammern | 1ÖTW Erste Lage | Kamptal DAC Grüner Veltliner

Ried Renner is found at the foot of the Riesling terraces of the Gaisberg. The soil structures here become deeper and show a better water supply for the vines. The soil is mixed with deposits and erosion material of the Gföhler Gneiss (brown paragneiss, mica and amphibolite).

Ried GRUB - Kammern | 1ÖTW Erste Lage | Kamptal DAC Grüner Veltliner

The Grub vineyard is located in a basin between the Heiligenstein and the Gaisberg. Somewhat elevated and sheltered from the wind, the vineyard opens to the south. 20,000 years ago, this protected site served as a camp site for mammoth and reindeer hunters. The soil is characterized by deep loess structures as well as the bone remains of Stone Age settlement.

Ried LAMM - Kammern | 1ÖTW Erste Lage | Kamptal DAC Grüner Veltliner

The Lamm vineyard is located at the foot of the southeastern flank of the Heiligenstein. The soil has, in addition to the erosion material of the Heiligenstein (Permian, red siltstone). Slight slope, facing south and well aerated grows grapes for a wine that is aged in double-barrel oak barrels of the Manhartsberg matures into a powerful yet elegant personality.

Vineyards and sustainable grape production

In 1996, the Schloss Gobelsburg winery was accepted into the prestigious Verein Österreichische Traditionsweingüter (Austrian Traditional Wineries Association). The association - founded in 1992 - is dedicated to Austria's wines of origin and has set itself the goal of classifying Austria's outstanding vineyard sites in order to provide consumers with an orientation aid in the great variety of Austria's wine characters.
Schloss Gobelsburg, as one of the oldest wineries in Austria, cultivates about 80 hectares of vineyards that extend around the castle. Each site has its own particularities and characteristics with different soil and microclimatic conditions. From sun-drenched terraced sites in the vineyards Heiligenstein and Gaisberg to the extensive gardens around Gobelsburg, the vines find different conditions. Each grape variety - according to its potential - should be offered the best possible opportunity for development. In the Krems Danube valleys there are two basic soil structures for the cultivation of white wine. On the one hand, there are the barren and stony terraced vineyards, where Riesling cultivation prevailed in the last century, and on the other hand, there are the loessy sandy soils, which are excellently suited for the cultivation of Grüner Veltliner.
