Schola Sarmenti
SCHOLA SARMENTI WINERY
At the heart of the Schola Sarmenti project are old gnarled vines. Behind dry stone walls, hedges and trees, vineyards have been preserved over the last 80-100 years, which were still cultivated in the old Apulian "Alberello" vine training system. (A kind of "tree training" without a wire frame.) As the vines stand alone (with their own character, so to speak) and also yield less than with modern training methods, they were no longer of interest to anyone. It takes strong and experienced hands to carry out all the work on each of these vines throughout the year. However, Alessandro Calabrese and Lorenzo Marra wanted to preserve this ancient Apulian culture and leased precisely these plots for Schola Sarmenti. The winery is located near Nardo in the province of Lecce, just south of the famous Manduria region. The wines are exceptional and cannot be compared with the "usual" Primitivo or Negroamaro qualities on the market.
