WINERY VAN VOLXEM

The van Volxem winery , rich in tradition, is located in historic Wiltingen on the Saar River. It dates back to a Roman villa complex from the 3rd century AD, fragments of which can still be seen on the grounds today. It is one of the oldest steep-slope vineyards in existence.

For four generations, the Van Volxem family ran the winery in Wiltingen. It was not until 2000 that Roman Niewodniczanski - who comes from the family that owns the Bitburger brewery - took over the farm, restored it, and acquired more top vineyards. His vision: to restore the wines from the Saar to the reputation they once had. In addition, it was his private concern to build up his own business with the winery - independent of the beer-brewing family.

Tasting note

The Saar Riesling from the Van Volxem winery is a radiant yellow with greenish reflections. This wine has a lavishly complex aroma with hints of ripe quince, peach and citrus fruit. Floral scents and mineral and herbal-spicy nuances refine the aroma. Its creamy expression unfolds on the palate with racy finesse and a beautiful interplay of sweetness and acidity. The slate characterizes the Riesling. It convinces into the long finish and lingers with an exquisite herbal-spicy note. This Saar Riesling is an ideal accompaniment to fresh salads, fish dishes and light Mediterranean cuisine.

It is absolutely no surprise that the Saar Riesling from Van Volxem has made it onto the wine lists of Lufthansa's First and Business Class. Highly ripe grapes from vines at least thirty years old from fabulous slate slopes on the Saar produce a beguilingly seductive Riesling. Once again, vine whisperer Roman Niewodniczansky had a golden touch. The winery perfectly showcases the value of the old vines and the mineral-rich terroir and refines the quality of the grapes into an enjoyable white wine.
