Uhudler: The cult wine

Uhudler is a fruity and refreshing wine that has a long tradition in the southern Styrian wine region of Austria and enjoys great popularity. Uhudler is a special wine because it is made from a special grape variety, the "American Blue", which is not allowed as a grape due to an EU wine law. For this reason Uhudler is declared as "frizzante" or "sparkling wine". In this type of wine, the floral sweetness of the grapes merges with a pleasant acidity, which gives Uhudler its special flavor. In this article we will learn more about the origin, taste and multiple uses of Uhudler.

Uhudler - from what properties?

Uhudler grape varieties are a group of autochthonous grape varieties known mainly in Austria, more specifically in the region of South Burgenland. These grape varieties were imported from North America in the 1950s and have since established themselves in the region.

The most famous Uhudler grape variety is the "Isabella", which is characterized by its intense red color and characteristic taste of strawberries and grapes. Besides the Isabella, there are other varieties such as the "Clinton" and the "Cayuga", which also have typical characteristics.

Uhudler wines are known for their fruity character and crisp acidity. They are often enjoyed as sparkling summer wines and make excellent refreshing accompaniments to light cuisine or as an aperitif.

It is important to note, however, that Uhudler wines do not meet EU wine standards due to their high content of so-called wild grapevines or hybrids (cross-bred varieties) and therefore may not be called "wine" in many European countries.

Nevertheless, Uhudler wines enjoy great popularity in the region of southern Burgenland and are unique representatives of the Austrian wine world. They are a symbol of tradition and craftsmanship, as well as the courage to try something new.

Why is the wine called Uhudler?

The name "Uhudler" is probably derived from the Burgenland word "Uhuder", which means "unusual" or "idiosyncratic". This designation was used for the autochthonous grape varieties grown in the region of southern Burgenland, which represent a particular departure from traditional European grape varieties.

Uhudler wine became popular in the 1950s, when the first vines were imported into the region from North America. These grape varieties do not belong to the classic European varieties and have special characteristics and aromas.

Since Uhudler wine was made from these unusual grape varieties, it was decided to call this wine Uhudler. Thus, the name reflects the uniqueness and originality of this wine.

It is important to note that the term "Uhudler" is legally protected and may only be used for certain grape varieties that comply with the cultivation regulations of the region. Therefore, not every wine made from the autochthonous grape varieties is automatically an Uhudler.
