Southern Styria: a paradise for wine lovers

Southern Styria is known for its fragrant, fresh wines, especially from the leading variety Sauvignon Blanc. However, many other varieties such as Welschriesling, Morillon, Muskateller and Traminer also grow on the 2340 hectares of vineyards.

Viticulture in southern Styria

Vineyards: Most of the vineyards are located on extremely steep slopes, which makes viticulture hard work.
Soils: The variety ranges from sand and slate to marl and shell limestone.
Climate: A warm, humid Mediterranean climate with cool nights promotes rich aromas.

Wine styles and quality

Junker: Slender, fruity young wines that herald the new vintage.
Klassik-Linie: Elegant wines with fine nuances.
Lagenweine: Highly ripe, extract-rich wines from special sites.

Top wines and innovation

Sauvignon Blanc from Southern Styria is now world-class. The winegrowers owe this to their openness to new experiences and their training at the viticulture school in Silberberg.
