French wine

The oldest French wine-growing region is Provence. Vines were already growing there when traveling merchants from Greece came to the city of Massalia, now Marseille, built by the ancient Phoenicians in 600 BC.
In modern times, around one fifth of the world's wines are produced in France on around 750,000 hectares, which corresponds to approximately three percent of all agricultural land and around 15 percent of agricultural value added. Bordeaux, Champagne, Rhône, Burgundy and Loire are considered the most potent regions - and the large wine-growing region of Languedoc-Roussillon produces an impressive 40 percent of French wines.
It is therefore not surprising that many French universities study oenology, i.e. wine cellar management, which is a field of study related to wine production and deals with both the pressing and ageing of wine. This is the way in which France continues to set standards worldwide - and this is why the French Republic is likely to remain the most famous wine country in the future.

French wine: the quality system

Vin de France
French wine in this category has no precise designation of origin. It is comparable to Austrian table wines.
IGP
Wines with the IGP designation(Indication Géographique Protégée) can be compared with country wines. Compared to the highest qualities, higher yields and non-traditional grape varieties are used for production.
VDQS
This designation stands for Vins Délimités de Qualité Supérieure. The wines offer above-average quality.
AOP
The quality designation AOP(Appellation d'Origine Protégée) is awarded to strictly controlled wines whose composition and origin are regulated. These are France's best wines.
